Hurva Synagogue

On this Mini Tour, you’ll have the chance to explore the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem. You’ll learn a bit about Judaism and the history of the quarter before and after two wars. This tour of the Jewish Quarter is structured mainly for non-Jewish people who want to learn more about Judaism. But everyone is welcome!

What are Mini Tours?

Backpack Israel’s Mini Tours are small group tours with up to 8 participants. Each guided tour takes up to 2 hours and focuses on an interesting place or topic connected to Israel.

Mini Tours are ideal for solo travelers or couples who want to enjoy the benefits of a local guide and a small group but don’t have the money for a private tour.

More about this Mini Tour

On this Mini Tour, we’ll get to know the story of Judaism and the Jewish Quarter.

Our tour will begin in the Roman Cardo, where we’ll talk about the history of this area of Jerusalem. Then, we’ll proceed to the remnants of a defensive wall, that protected the city from the Assyrians about 2700 years ago. It is one of the most massive ancient walls discovered in Jerusalem.

After talking about the wall and its story, we’ll stop to talk about some basics of Judaism and then visit one of the quarter’s beautiful synagogues. You’ll get to see the structure of the synagogue from the inside and we’ll talk a bit about how it operates. (*If for some reason we will not be able to enter due to a special event, I will show you photos instead).

The synagogues of the quarter have been completely ruined by the Jordanians during the 1948 Independence War. After our visit to the synagogue, we’ll stop to watch a short video about the war and hear the testimonies of the Jewish people who lived here and fought for their home. Then, we’ll proceed through the charming alleyways of the Jewish Quarter to the place from where they were taken into Jordanian captivity.

We’ll finish the tour at the Western Wall, the holiest place for the Jewish people. There, you can place a note with a wish in between the holy stones.

How much does it cost?

The cost is 120 shekels per person (about 36 USD). There is no need for prepayment. Pay on the spot!
